Do I need a vehicle report?

If you are buying a used vehicle, the seller knows things about it that you do not. A report is how you check the parts of that story which were written down somewhere: how many keepers it has had, whether an insurer has written it off, whether money is still owed on it, and whether the mileage on the dashboard matches what was recorded at each MOT.

None of that replaces looking at the vehicle, or a mechanic’s inspection. It tells you which questions to ask before you hand over any money, and sometimes it tells you to walk away.

What a clear report does not mean

A check that finds nothing means no record was found on the register we searched, on the day we searched it. Damage settled privately, a finance agreement that was never registered, or an accident nobody reported leave no trace anywhere. We say so in the report rather than letting a blank line read as a guarantee.

How it works

You order

Enter the registration, pay securely in pounds, and we confirm your order by email straight away.

We research it

A member of our team checks the vehicle against the sources we are licensed to use, and records which checks were possible.

You receive it

We email a private link to your PDF report [delivery time to be confirmed]. The link is yours alone and expires.

What a report can tell you

  • Vehicle details and specification

Make, model, variant, engine size, fuel, transmission, colour and the date the vehicle was first registered.

Describes the vehicle as recorded, not its present condition. A vehicle can be correctly described and still be a poor buy.

  • Current tax and MOT status

Whether the vehicle is currently taxed and holds a valid MOT, and when each is due to expire.

A snapshot taken on the day we research it. Status can change the day after your report is sent.

  • MOT history, advisories and failures

Every recorded MOT test, the result, the recorded mileage at the time, and the advisories and failure items noted by the tester.

Only covers tests that were recorded. A vehicle under three years old will usually have no history at all.

  • Mileage records and inconsistencies

Recorded mileage readings in date order, so a reading that falls rather than rises stands out.

Built from readings that were recorded somewhere. A consistent set of readings is not proof that the mileage is genuine.

  • Previous keepers

How many keepers the vehicle has had and when each change was recorded.

A keeper is the person responsible for the vehicle, which is not always its legal owner. No names or addresses are supplied, and we would not pass them on if they were.

  • Registration (plate) changes

Whether the vehicle has carried a different registration before, and when it changed.

Changing a plate is lawful and common. It is a question to ask the seller, not a finding against the vehicle.

  • Insurance write-off category

Whether an insurer has recorded the vehicle as a write-off, and under which category (A, B, S or N).

Only covers write-offs that were reported to the register we search. Damage settled privately leaves no record anywhere.

  • Stolen vehicle marker

Whether the vehicle is recorded as stolen and not recovered on the register we search.

A clear result means no marker was found on that register on that day. It is not a statement that the vehicle was never stolen, and it is not a police check.

  • Outstanding finance

Whether a finance agreement is recorded against the vehicle, with the lender and the date where that is published.

Only covers agreements registered with the finance register we search. A lender who has not registered an agreement will not appear.

  • Import, export and scrapped markers

Whether the vehicle was imported, has been exported, or has been recorded as scrapped or unscrapped.

An import marker says where the vehicle came from, not whether it was looked after there.

  • Vehicle valuation

An indicative trade, private and forecourt value for the vehicle as described.

An estimate from the recorded specification and age. Nobody has seen the vehicle, so condition, service history and mileage can move it a long way.

Every check gets one of three answers

A check described without its limits reads as a promise. Yours says which of these applied, source by source.

  1. Found

A record exists. The report sets out what it says, and which source said it.

  2. Nothing recorded

The source was searched and held nothing for your vehicle. That is not the same as the vehicle being clear, and the report says so.

  3. Not checked

We could not run it — the source was unavailable, or it does not cover your vehicle. The reason is written next to it, never left blank.

Every source we publish gets one of these three, in writing, on every report. A gap is never left for you to read as a pass.

A package says which checks we will run. It does not promise that every check returns a record for your vehicle: where one cannot be completed, your report says so and explains why.

What the report covers

We publish exactly which sources we use and what each one can tell us:

[the data sources for this service have not been published yet]

Where a check is not available for a particular vehicle, the report says so rather than leaving it out.

What we do not do

  • We do not claim any partnership with the DVLA, the DVSA or any government body.
  • We do not promise checks we cannot actually carry out for your vehicle.
  • We do not generate reports automatically, and we do not guess at missing data.
  • We do not sell, share or market to your details.

Ready when you are
